Warren Williams Obituary -
Mr.
Warren Williams Lafayette, LA - A Mass of Christian Burial will be
Saturday, July 20, 2013, 11:00 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic
Church for Mr. Warren Williams, 100. He will be buried in Calvary
Cemetery. On Friday, July 12, 2013, Warren Williams was taken into God's
loving arms after 100 years of life. He went into his eternal sleep at
home in Lafayette, Louisiana with family by his side. Warren was born on
August 1, 1912 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His father was Eddie Williams of
New Orleans, Louisiana, and his mother was Caroline Martin, although born
in Lafayette,
Louisiana, spent most of her life in New Orleans. Both preceded their son
in death. Warren began his military service soon after graduating high
school and served in World War II as an Army soldier. Upon his return, he
studied electronics and started a small business in electronic repair. He
was an avid checker player who attained instructor status resulting in
numerous awards. His accomplishments include, but are not limited to
induction into the International Checker Hall of Fame, Certificate of
Appreciation for outstanding and dedicated service as President of the
International Checkers Society, and received one of few appreciation
plaques that bear the expression "We love you," from members of the
American Checkers Association. Warren relocated to Lafayette, Louisiana,
first residing with niece and nephew Freddie and Dianne Allen for a time
after Hurricane Katrina. In loving demand, he spent his remaining years
with his niece Sherrol Lyons and her partner, Adam Lewis, who became his
primary caregiver. He was part of a large family too numerous to name -
yet, he loved each and every one as they loved him. Viewing will be
Saturday, July 20, 2013 from 7:00 - 10:30 AM at Kinchen Funeral Home. The
rosary will be prayed at 9:00 AM. Kinchen Funeral Home, Inc. of Lafayette
is in charge of final arrangements.

Dear 100-square checker enthusiasts,
Herbert "Cookey" Burrell called me last night from New Orleans
to inform me of the death of Warren Williams, long-time
president of the New Orleans Checker Club and the American
International Checkers Society (AICS). Mr. Williams lived to
be 101 years old. He left New Orleans after the 2005 flood and
went to live with a niece in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Williams retired from active play 20 years ago or more, but
still traveled to AICS tournaments in distant states such as
Delaware, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania, in his 90's, in the
company of Herbert and his brother Joe Burrell.
May this remarkable man rest in peace, Roger Blaine.
